The atoll in the central part of the Pacific Ocean consists of the East and Sand Islands. Total area - 5 sq. km. Population - 2.5 thousand Captured by the United States in 1867 Until 1903, when the Americans established a trans-Pacific telegraph service station on the islands, they were uninhabited. It is currently a US naval base.
