An island in the central part of the Pacific Ocean. Territory - 259 sq. km. Population - 3.8 thousand (estimate 1976); consists mainly of Polynesian-Niueans, annually reduced by 100 - 150 people, as a result of emigration. The administrative center is Alofi. The official language is English. Possession of New Zealand since 1901 Since October 1974, has internal self-government within the framework of "free association" with New Zealand. New Zealand is responsible for defense and foreign affairs. The New Zealand Resident Commissioner maintains control over the activities of the local Legislative Assembly. The executive branch is represented by a prime minister and 3 ministers elected by the assembly. The basis of the economy is the cultivation of coconut trees and bananas, the production of copra. About 80% of exports go to New Zealand. The export and sale of local handicrafts to tourists is also an important source of income.
