Pitcairn

An island of volcanic origin in the southeastern Pacific Ocean. Territory - 4.5 sq. km. Population - 66 people (1978), mostly Anglo-Polynesian mestizos. The colony also includes uninhabited islands located near Pitcairn Island: Henderson, Ducy, Oeno. The administrative center is Adamstown (the only village on the island). The official language is English. First discovered by Europeans in 1767 Inhabited in 1790 by English sailors from the rebellious ship "Bounty" and Polynesians brought from Tahiti. Run by the English administration. There is a local governing body - the Island Council. The occupation of the inhabitants is agriculture (growing corn, taro, vegetables) and fishing. The main source of income is the export of postage stamps issued on the island.
